I an using the Content Cards plugin to handle oEmbed content, which works really nicely.

I found a workaround to make QFIP do what I need it to do, which is essentially your suggestion, with a twist.

My content essentially looks like this:

[contentcards url=...]

<img class="hidden" src="..." />

I defined a custom CSS class: .hidden { display: none; }, which effectively hides the image when the post is viewed (because contentcards is showing the image) but allows QFIP to work as designed.

This makes my own workflow a little more complicated to create a post, but I can live with it, as I am posting anywhere from zero to twice a day.
